Team of Rivals by Doris Kearns Goodwin - For me, this is the ultimate book on leadership because it isn't a summary about what the top ten successful leaders do - it is about how a man chose to live his life. Great read! I avoided reading the final pages for weeks because I knew the outcome and really didn't want to face it, imagining all the possibilities had Abraham Lincoln lived beyond his Presidency.
Execution, The Discipline of Getting Things Done by Larry Bossidy and Ram Charan– Larry Bossidy is one of the world’s most acclaimed CEOs, a man with few peers who has a track record for delivering results. Ram Charan is a legendary advisor to senior executives and boards of directors, a man with unparalleled insight into why some companies are successful and others are not. Together they’ve pooled their knowledge and experience into the one book on how to close the gap between results promised and results delivered.
This book and my subsequent Franklin Covey Master Certification in The 4 Disciplines of Execution rocked my Organization Development world and changed how I organized my thinking about everything! Thomas Edison wrote “Vision without execution is hallucination.” In other words, it’s great to think it, but if you can’t do it, get it done, execute on it - it’s just a nice idea. This book taught me how to set a goal, figure out how to measure it and identify simple activities I could practice every day to help me achieve it, emphasis on "simple." As an OD Consultant, I was able to document unbelievable accomplishments. As a mother I was able to teach my child how to improve on his report card. And as a therapist, I use the same framework to help clients make the best use of our time together and continually make progress towards their goals. Fabulous for anyone hoping to accomplish a goal!
Feeling Great The Revolutionary New Treatment for Depression and Anxiety by Dr. David Burns – I discovered Feeling Good in my late 20’s as I was struggling to find my way, my direction in life. I still use many of those exercises today and that was a very long time ago now - LOL. And just out September, 2020 is Feeling Great, more incredible, helpful, inspiring than Feeling Good was for me.
Daring Greatly, The Gifts of Imperfection, I Thought It Was Just Me, Rising Strong, Braving the Wildness, Dare To Lead by Dr. Brené Brown http://BreneBrown.com - After watching her TED talks, I ran out and bought her books. After reading her books, I signed up for a National Certification Training in The Daring Way™ http://TheDaringWay.com Do I really need to say anything else? Big fan! Big, BIG fan!!!
The Spellman Book Series by Lisa Lutz – These books are just a darn fun read! As I journeyed through the devastation and challenges of my father’s stroke and my mother’s lung cancer and subsequent death, the Spellman family provided me with a fun escape which I desperately needed. I am forever grateful to Lisa Lutz and actually wrote an e-mail thanking her and received a personal e-mail back from her. So I also think she is a good person in the world and am happy to support her talent.
Your Money or Your Life: 9 steps to Transforming Your Relationship with Money and Achieving Financial Independence by Vicki Robin, Joe Dominguez and Monique Tilford - This book literally did change how I thought about money and how I shop! In a world where we are unconsciously manipulated to believe that more is better, this book will help you decide how hard you want to work for all those things.
